Travelling to a UKTC event from Abroad

August: Wave 2 In-Person Regional Championships

Travelling to the U.K. to enjoy your hobby is simple and affordable if you know a few helpful tips.

Flights

There are loads of cheap flights to the U.K. when you book in advance and use a flight comparison tool like www.skyscanner.com. Direct flights can often be found for less that $50 return.

Leicester is located in the centre of the U.K. and it is easy to travel to the city from any of the following locations:

  • London (Heathrow / Gatwick / Stansted / Luton)

  • Birmingham

  • East Midlands

  • Manchester

Passport Control

If you are an EEA citizen, you may find it faster to use your passport rather than your EEA national identity card at the UK border.

This is because:

  • passports are faster for our Border Force officers to process

  • you can use your EU passport at our eGates

There are over 270 eGates in the U.K. making getting through passport control a quick and easy experience.

You can normally use eGates if you:

  • have a biometric symbol on the cover of your passport

  • are a national of an EU country, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland or the USA

Those travelling with ID cards cannot use the eGates.

Getting from the Airport to Leicester

Trains and Busses in the U.K. are cheap and affordable if booked in advance. However they can get very expensive if booked on the day of travel or shortly before. We recommend all attendees plan their travel early as connections to Leicester from London can be found online for as little as $5.00.

The most affordable inter-city travel is by coach:

Train travel can be booked in advance from:

Please be aware that the U.K. is a small country and if you are travelling in a group of 2 or more, it may be considerably cheaper to rent a car from the airport and drive to Leicester. You can find cheap airport car rental from www.skyscanner.com

Where to Stay
Leicester is a major city with many hotels at different price points.

The easiest way to compare hotels and book a room is to use a tool like www.Booking.com

Please be aware that some budget friendly hotels are not listed on booking.com and if you are looking for cheap accommodation we recommend www.premierinn.com
